Tightly woven rattan and bamboo form this circa-1940s–1960s Chinese carrying basket, traditionally used for food or wedding gifts. Dark lacquered bands alternate with warm woven panels, and a pierced upper gallery provides texture and ventilation.
The tall wood handle has openwork scrolling supports and engraved decoration. Gold-painted Chinese characters contrast with the black lacquered lid. Three removable circular containers remain inside, allowing the basket to function as storage as well as a display object. Reddish-brown tones and varied textures suit collected, chinoiserie, English Country and colonial interiors.
Note: Tabletop is approximately 47" x 31.5".
