Chinese terracotta is earthenware pottery made from natural clay and fired at lower temperatures than porcelain, resulting in a porous, unglazed surface with earthy tones ranging from buff to reddish-brown. These vessels were used for storage, rituals, and burial purposes throughout Chinese dynasties, developing rich patina and weathered surfaces over centuries. The coarser texture and natural aging make each antique terracotta piece unique with distinct character.

Chinese terracotta jars and pots were originally used for storing food, wine, oil, and grains, as well as for ceremonial rituals and burial purposes. Many terracotta vessels found today were burial objects (mingqi) placed in tombs to accompany the deceased in the afterlife, dating back to the Yangshao and Longshan cultures (5000-2000 BC).
