This vintage Chinese planter features a deep, hand-applied glaze that transitions from a warm, mottled brown at the rim to concentrated blue and black pooling toward the base. The vessel is wheel-thrown with a thick, rounded lip and a subtly tapered body, giving it a strong, utilitarian presence typical of mid-20th-century provincial kiln production. Its weight, scale, and robust walls make it suitable for indoor or covered outdoor use, whether for housing a small tree, a tabletop arrangement, or simply serving as a sculptural ceramic accent.
The glaze is characteristic of traditional high-temperature firings: a rich, iron-based brown layered over darker cobalt-toned runs, creating variation and depth under light. Minor irregularities and the hand-tooled marks around the shoulder reinforce its workshop-made character rather than modern factory manufacture. The unglazed interior and base show expected kiln traces and natural wear consistent with age.
This planter works well in eclectic, rustic, wabi-sabi, or classic interiors where authentic surface patina and handmade texture are valued. Several examples of similar form and glaze exist in slightly different sizes, making it possible to group them for a collected look or use individually as a standalone decorative element.
