This vintage Chinese lacquered box is finely decorated with an allover floral and foliate composition accented by delicately rendered birds, executed against a deep black ground. The decoration features a rich palette of soft pinks, muted reds, greens, and gold tones, arranged in a continuous garden scene that wraps around all sides of the box, with the same motif carried across the lid for a cohesive, immersive effect.
Rectangular in form, the box opens on brass hinges to reveal a neatly felt-lined interior in black, suitable for storing documents, textiles, jewelry, or personal objects. A small interior chain limits the opening angle of the lid, reflecting careful construction and intended everyday use. The painted decoration shows fine line work and subtle tonal variation, characteristic of Chinese export and domestic lacquer work of the mid- to late 20th century.
