Dating to circa 1900, this pair of tall Chinese architectural panels features raised gilt calligraphy against a deep red painted ground. The complementary panels likely once flanked a doorway or opening as a traditional vertical couplet.

Different sequences of carved characters run along the gently convex wooden forms, while scrolling terminals finish the tops and bases. At 82 inches tall, the panels create dramatic vertical impact with little wall width and may be installed together, displayed independently or leaned in an entry or living space.
