Dating to circa 1900, this Japanese Meiji-period bronze hibachi combines a substantial faceted body and deep brown patina with sculptural elephant-head mounts and articulated ring handles.

The vessel has a broad circular opening - measuring 10" diameter - surrounded by a thick rounded rim, above a gently tapering neck with molded horizontal bands. Below, the body expands into a series of broad faceted panels before narrowing toward a molded circular foot. The contrast between the angular central body and rounded upper and lower sections gives the piece a strong, architectural presence.

At either side are stylized elephant-head mounts supporting heavy loose ring handles, adding a sculptural element to the otherwise restrained form. The bronze surface has developed a warm dark brown patina with scattered areas of green oxidation and tonal variation associated with age and use.

The interior retains visible residue and oxidation from its original function as a hibachi, a Japanese charcoal brazier used for heating. Today it also works beautifully as a decorative vessel, cachepot or jardinière.

Three examples are available, each with individual variations in patina and interior condition.
