An early Meiji period Sendai Isho-dansi chest from circa 1860-1880 with eight drawers, petite door and dark patina. This early Meiji-period Sendai Isho-dansu is a striking example of Japanese craftsmanship, expertly constructed from keyaki wood with a rich swirling grain. Featuring deep kuro-gane blackened iron hardware, including ornate corner brackets, lockplates, and drawer pulls, this chest exemplifies the artistry of late 19th-century Sendai region tansu-makers. Its asymmetrical layout offers a combination of spacious drawers for textiles and garments alongside a hinged door compartment, designed for smaller valuables or household essentials.
With its dark lacquer finish, the tansu’s natural keyaki grain shines through, creating an aged patina that speaks to its storied past. The ironwork not only enhances its visual appeal but also reinforces the structure, ensuring its longevity.
