Richly detailed and visually captivating, this vintage four-panel hand-painted screen features a striking tableau of red-crested cranes and lotus blossoms set against a dramatic black lacquered ground. The hand-painted scene unfolds across four hinged panels, each bordered with scrolling green vine motifs, framing a serene lakeside landscape with blossoming lotus pads, willow branches, and delicately rendered birds.
The red-crowned cranes — symbols of longevity and good fortune in East Asian art — are depicted in graceful poses, some standing amid rocky outcroppings, others tending to the water’s edge. The palette of cream, russet, and celadon contrasts beautifully with the deep black lacquer, creating a sense of visual rhythm and balance. Highlights are painted in a traditional flat chinoiserie style, likely dating this piece to the mid to late 20th century.
The reverse features a simpler scene of lotus leaves and blossoms in a continuous landscape, allowing the screen to serve as both a decorative focal point and a versatile room divider. Visible scuffing, edge wear, and some loss to the lacquer surface are consistent with age and use. Brass hinges connect the panels. A classic statement piece.
