This large antique Chinese trunk features a deep reddish-brown lacquer finish and classic form, pairing functional storage with understated architectural elegance. The piece likely dates to the early 20th century and is constructed in a traditional hardwood—possibly elm or pine—with a warm-toned surface that reveals traces of hand-planing and natural wear. The dark lacquer has aged beautifully, producing a surface with a complex interplay of red and black undertones.
The trunk’s rectangular shape is anchored by a molded plinth base detailed with a row of recessed panels and carved pilaster accents. A large circular brass lock plate punctuates the front, flanked by simple iron drop handles on either side for ease of movement. The hinged top lifts to reveal a spacious interior lined with unfinished wood, offering generous storage.
