Dating to the 19th century, this Chinese Qing architectural panel presents carved gilt calligraphy against a dramatic black-lacquer ground.
The gilded surface has developed extensive craquelure, rubbing, small losses and darker areas from age and use, producing the wonderfully layered patina visible throughout. A narrow incised border frames the inscription while allowing the calligraphy to remain the principal decorative element. The reverse has been left comparatively plain, retaining an old reddish-brown surface and evidence of its original construction and age.
Panels of this type were generally architectural or ceremonial in function and could have been displayed in an ancestral hall, residence or other formal interior. The wording appears honorific in character, with references associated with virtue and commendation.
At over eight and a half feet tall yet only ten inches wide, it makes an unusually dramatic vertical accent and would work particularly well between windows, alongside a doorway, or as part of a collection of Asian art and architectural fragments.
The height includes the hanging fitting in its normal resting position, not with the upper handle raised.
