About the collection

Japanese Tansu

The Japanese Tansu collection presents antique and vintage storage chests from Japan, primarily crafted during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These pieces are made from kiri and keyaki hardwoods, with precise joinery, sliding doors, and hand-forged iron hardware that showcase traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Types of tansu include step chests (kaidan-dansu) with modular, architectural forms; merchant chests (choba-dansu) with compartments for goods and records; and clothing chests (isho-dansu) with drawers and cabinets for garments. Their balanced proportions and functional interiors make them both practical and visually striking in modern settings.

Many retain original finishes and iron fittings, showing a rich patina from decades of use. Restored examples highlight the warmth of the wood grain while ensuring strength for daily storage needs. Their designs adapt easily, serving as functional storage in living rooms, entryways, dining areas, or bedrooms while adding sculptural presence.

Browse the full range in Japanese Tansu and explore other storage categories such as Trunks & Chests, Armoires & Dressers, and Small Cabinets & Nightstands. Shop antique and vintage Japanese chests that embody utility, history, and design excellence.
