An antique Japanese late Meiji period black lacquer blanket chest from the early 20th century, with gold, white and green floral décor, brass hardware and blue painted accents. Created in Japan during the late Meiji period in the early 20th century, this blanket chest features a linear silhouette perfectly accented by a black lacquer and gold painted décor. The trunk showcases a rectangular lid adorned with golden foliage highlighted with white, yellow and green flowers. This décor is interrupted in a unusual manner by blue painted stripes running along the sides.
This four-hinged lid opens thanks to a traditional brass lock to reveal a black lacquered interior, convenient to store items such as blankets and linens. It is secured to the body thanks to ribbons and it won't stand on its own. The sides present C-scroll handles on floral shaped backplates. With its clean lines and gold and black color, this Japanese late Meiji period blanket chest circa 1900 will make for a lovely decorative addition to any home, placed in a bedroom or living room.
