Description

A Chinese Song Dynasty period hand-carved limestone head of a smiling Lohan circa 960 to 1279 AD. Created in China during the Song Dynasty, this limestone head, found in Hong Kong, depicts a Lohan, a learned sage and Buddhist practitioner, mounted on a custom base. The smiling Lohan can be identified thanks to his bald head and long earlobes. In Theravada Buddhism, the Arhat, translated into Chinese as Lohan, is one who has followed the Eightfold Path and has achieved deliverance of this earthly existence.

In China, Lohans were often given unusual physical characteristics, such as misshapen heads, extremely thin frames and exceeding long eyebrows. They are known for their great wisdom, courage and supernatural power. With its skillful execution and great age, this Song Dynasty Lohan head sculpture will be a great decorative addition to any home, perhaps displayed atop a commode, buffet or console table.
