Description

An early 20th century religious temple plaque hand-carved of Sheesham wood in India. This small rectangular plaque displays two sections with several characters. The bottom section showcases a Hindu goddess, perhaps Shiva (third eye on its forehead, four arms). The goddess holds lotus, which is a purity symbol in India. The elephants offer crowns to the goddess, while apsaras (flying deities) surmount them. The background showcases openwork foliage’s. The upper section depicts two musicians.

 

This very detailed plaque was carved of Sheesham, a solid Indian wood, in order to adorn a temple.
