A petite antique Thai wooden Buddha sculpture from the Ayutthaya period, with the Bhumisparsha Mudra, Calling the Earth to Witness. Created in Thailand during the Ayutthaya period (1350–1767), this small sculpture depicts the Buddha seated in the attitude of “calling the earth to witness”, his right hand delicately brushing the ground. This scene occurs during a long meditation and symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment.
The Buddha's eyes are half-closed, his face is stylized and he is resting on a tall pedestal adorned with an elegant carpet. The ensemble shoes great age and patina. With its petite proportions, this 17th or 18th century Thai Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness will be an excellent decorative choice for any room, particularly displayed on a bookshelf or atop a chest of drawers, side table or pedestal.
