A petite antique Thai wooden Buddha sculpture from the Ayutthaya period, with the Bhumisparsha Mudra, Calling the Earth to Witness and distressed appearance. Created in Thailand during the Ayutthaya period (1350–1767), this small sculpture depicts the Buddha seated in the attitude of “calling the earth to witness”, his right hand delicately brushing the ground.
This scene occurs during a long meditation and symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment. The Buddha, resting on a tall base, shows great age and a nicely weathered appearance. With its petite proportions, this Thai Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness will be an excellent decorative choice for any room, particularly displayed on a bookshelf or atop a chest of drawers, side table or pedestal.
