A Japanese merchants chest from the Meiji period, with single cabinet, iron accents and hardware. This Japanese 19th century merchant's chest was made of Kiri wood and iron during the Meiji period (1868-1912). This uncommon item displays numerous drawers, a top drawer, two medium ones and three small ones, a door and two sliding panels opening on a shelf. Each one features iron accents and handles contrasting with the pale natural color of the Kiri wood.
The lateral handles remind us that at the end of the day, the first use of this piece was to be a merchant's chest. This 19th century Meiji Japanese merchant's chest with iron accents would be an excellent decorative accent in any home, perhaps placed in a bedroom, living room or office.
