A Han or Tang dynasty Chinese hand-painted terracotta horse sculpture with scroll motifs. This sculpture was made with the traditional bivalve mold Chinese technique and hand painted with scroll motifs. The eyes and the harness are painted in black. Such items were put in graves in order to reproduce the deceased’s environment, which explains the missing legs.
The Han dynasty spanned from 202 BC-220 AD, while the Tang dynasty went from 618 -907 AD. Whichever date this sculpture was created, with its astonishing presence and patina to die for, this Chinese hand-painted terracotta horse sculpture will bring a touch of authenticity to any home, whether placed atop a side table, chest-of-drawers or on a mantel.
