Description

An antique Japanese woodblock print from the 19th century depicting monks having tea. Created in Japan during the 19th century, this woodblock print showcases an indoor scene featuring monks having tea. Two women flanking a monk, are facing a fourth character sitting across from them. The diagonal created by the trio leads the eye to the calligraphic print depicted in the upper left side of the composition. Red, blue, black, yellow and green tones are standing out beautifully on a beige background.

The process of woodblock printing would start with an artist’s drawing that would be transferred from paper to a cherry-wood block, which was carved and then inked, before blank sheets of paper were laid on top. Set inside a black frame and secured under glass, this Japanese 19th century woodblock print will be a great addition to any wall, perhaps hung above a credenza, altar table or sofa.
