Description

An antique Japanese woodblock print from the 19th century depicting a ceremonial tassel. Created in Japan during the 19th century, this woodblock print attracts our attention with its depiction of ceremonial objects: a ribbon-tied tassel with bells occupies the center of the composition and creates a great diagonal leading our eye from left to right. The background is accented with a fan featuring two black and white Manchurian cranes, a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity.

Showcasing red, cream, grey and brown tones, the print is signed on the right. The process of woodblock printing would start with an artist’s drawing that would be transferred from paper to a cherry-wood block, which was carved and then inked, before blank sheets of paper were laid on top. Set inside a gilded frame with matting and secured under glass, this Japanese 19th century woodblock print will make for a great addition to any wall, perhaps hung above a credenza, altar table or sofa.
